New Filter Basket Debut


The debate about filter basket design has always centered on the part that holds it into the portafilter body, rarely about the part that actually filters the coffee.  American infatuation with tamping, whether with an automated grinder or a super snug press, has dictated the ridged/non-ridged/inward/outward dialogue, has generated countless thouasands of web posts.

That is about to change.  Because size matters.

We are beginning receive filter baskets manufactured with much more precise hole diameters and a more highly polished and consistent interior finish.  The manufacturing method has historically meant punching dimples into the bottom of the baskets and then grinding them to reveal holes left from the dimpling process.  The new method results in a much more precise deformation of the pressed image leaving a bit more metal in the base eliminating the surface ridges and greatly enhanced precision on the sizing of the holes.

Espresso Machine Design Theory

A few years ago I conducted a seminar on espresso machine design, contrasting what the Italians had been doing with some of the trends popular with American manufacturers.  The materials were never published nor made available aside from the occassional email, but the issues are still relavent.
 
The document is available as a PDF download in the download file section and may be linked or distributed with attribution by anyone interested.  It was put together with considerable help and support from the consumer coffee community who somehow had the free time to data log their machine modifications.  This article, in part, tries to put these findings in perspective with what I have learned from working with Italian espresso machine engineers.

It also tries to impart why the Italians think we are all a little nuts.
